NaNoWriMo Winner 2014

At 1:30 this afternoon I wrapped up my writing for the day with 1,710 words. Which puts me at 50,280 words for the month. Done. No. National Novel Writing Month winner. Yes. At least a winner by one count, and that count would be in words written. On a number of other counts I would say, loser. Why, you ask?   I did not write every day. When I look back at my day to day stats, there were apparently eight days that I had a word count total of zero. That means, small victory here, that I wrote 50,280 words in 22 days. I did not write a 50,000 word novel. Which of course is the assignment for National Novel Writing Month, write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. And I did not complete a novel. Hell, I'm not even sure how much of the novel is left to be written. I'm leaning toward another 20,000 words, but being as I am basically pantsing this novel, i.e. writing this thing without an outline or any real idea what comes next, that's just a guess So on those three counts I have fai

Words

Sorry, haven't really kept you up to speed. There have been good days of writing and bad days of writing. But I skipped most of last week because I was just beat after work, that was a bad thing. I still expect to make it to 50,000 by the end of the month and I managed 3,206 more words tonight, which is a nice number.

...And I'm Back

So I had a problem. I'm not even sure when it started. All I know for sure is that I couldn't access either of my two web pages for the better part of a week and I finally decided it wasn't some self correcting glitch or service interruption and opened a ticket with LunarPages. I was seeing server not responding timeouts in my browser and ftp client, so I ran a TraceRoute and sure as shit it was timing out. This is what LunarPages found. The 71.205.131.10 IP Address appears to have been blocked on the SHADOW server. This block has been removed and you should now be able to access your website/server without issue. The IP listing on the server firewall showed as follows: 71.205.131.10 # lfd: (pop3d) Failed POP3 login from 71.205.131.10 (US/United States/c-71-205-131-10.hsd1.mi.comcast.net): 10 in the last 300 secs - Thu Nov 20 14:23:42 2014 IP addresses are normally only blocked on the server when there are repeated connection attempts to the server from the same IP address

Whats Under Your Hat

Worst Vacation Ever

So I had a 'hell week', what with all the snow and the no heat calls. I had my 40-hours in at 2:30 pm and I was off to enjoy my vacation time. But no. At 5:45 pm I got a call, of course my PTO doesn't really start until Saturday, but still. No heat. I was out until 8:00 pm. Didn't really fix it, but I got it running. Hard to find parts after six on a Friday night. Warned the property manager that it might run for a week, a day, or an hour. I really just wanted it to last until Monday. No such luck. Saturday morning, 9:15 am, I get a call. It's down again. Please fix... Aren't I on vacation? Went out anyway. Somehow managed to find parts. fixed the thing. Made it home by 12:30. Best part is that there will be issues on Monday regarding billing and paperwork and and and... Not a good start to things.

Go, See, Do

A Week of Vacation

Last day of work for a week. Yes, I'm taking another block of PTO. Yes, I'll still have 3+ more days of time when I get back. But it's been a hell week and I'm walking away from it all for a time.

Back On Course

Took a heavy weekend of writing, but I'm back on track and on schedule with my word count. And as a bonus I've earned my 25,000 word badge on the NaNoWriMo site. Between Saturday, and Sunday I cranked out 6,627 words. Friday, was wasted on stuff that really wasn't pertinent to the story, with an effective word count of -651 words. I'm 54% of the way to my 50,000 word goal.

A Thank You on Veterans Day

Since 1776, tens of millions of Americans have served in the armed forces. Let us take this opportunity to honor all veterans who have taken service and given of their selves for our freedom. Thank you for your service to the country. Thank you for protecting my freedom. We as a nation salute you.

Quotable Aine Greaney

"Sometimes our narratives flounder under their own ignorance. The writing turns insipid because we simply don’t know enough about our subject. When this happens, be ready to put the writing on temporary bed rest and plan how you will get more information. I’m not talking a quickie Wikipedia search – I’m talking a solid research strategy, complete with a list of sources, including the people you may need to interview. ” --Aine Greaney

Starship Adventure

My vacation is over, time to go back to work and see what has piled up while I was away. Tonight I wrote 1,802 words and am sitting at 15,711 words on my 50,000 word novel. I'm 30% through my story about a crashed spaceship and I can't seem to get them out of space and off the ship. Anyway, here's a couple things I put together for my own enjoyment and inspiration. I'm sharing them with you because, well, because that's what I do. Here's the wallpaper that I've got up on the screen as reference and inspiration. And here are a couple inspirations for the two other alien races that humanity shares this little corner of space with.     The ennabrun were humanity's shepherds into faster than light space travel and for a time it's mentors and allies, things have changed somewhat as of the time my story takes place. The xhakdoz are the race that humanity was recruited to fight against on the behalf of the ennabrun. That relationship, too, has evolved.

Big Day of Writing

After a lackluster day of writing yesterday, today, I kicked out the jams. I did three blocks of writing and put together 3,159 words for the day. Which makes the even bigger news that I broke the 20% completion mark and am sitting at 10,004 words.

Words, What Words

Only 576 words tonight. Way too much procrastination. At 6,845 words I'm still 177 words ahead of schedule, but I've destroyed the cushion I made for myself. Going to have to do better tomorrow.

"While you cannot force ideas into existence, you can coax them into view. When you first notice some exciting fragment, your impulse may be to brush it aside. It looks so… so small, so slight. Don’t be deceived. What matters is not the idea’s size by its resonance." --Stephen Koch

New PC, New PC. Joy, Joy.

The timing isn't great, given that I'm in the middle of a bunch of different things... vacation, nanowrimo, finishing the half-bath, and trying to put something together for arohenTV; but my new DELL PC arrived this morning, so I just have to take a break from everything to get it set up :)

Starship Adventure Day 1

I started NaNoWriMo off with a bang this year. Tonight I wrote 2,129 words. Things didn't go quite the way I thought they would, but things didn't go badly by any means. Sometimes writing is all about the outline and sometimes writing is all about the surprises.

NaNoWriMo Day 1

National Novel Writing Month is upon us and so the writing has begun. I managed to get 2,129 words today on my novel, Starship Adventure. I may have to build or find a word count meter to keep track of this. I know I used to have a few over at RonnMcCarrick.com ...

Let's all Celebrate

Not only is today the start of National Novel Writing Month, but it is also National Author's Day. And so by celebrating author's day as a nation, we not only show patriotism, loyalty and appreciation of the men and women who have made American literature possible but also encourage and inspire others to give of themselves in making a better America. So to all the authors who I have read, and all the many others I have yet to read, I salute you. Now lets get back to writing that NaNoWriMo project... you need 1,667 words by the end of the day.

Happy National Author's Day

Today is National Author's Day. So take a break from your NaNoWriMo project and drop your favorite author a line of thanks. By celebrating you are not only showing your patriotism, loyalty and appreciation of the men and women who have made American literature possible but also encouraging and inspiring others to give of themselves in making a better America through literature. Write on!
