Healthy Living WK05

The discussion board subject for this week in healthy living. 1. Should the government be involved with making laws to prevent the obesity epidemic? Explain! Should individuals have to pay more for their health insurance if they are unhealthy due to their own life choices (i.e eating poorly, not exercising, smoking, drinking, using drugs, etc.) 2. Share a Healthy Recipe with the class! Provide Recipe and Ingredients. I feel that government regulation would go a long way toward removing some of the worst parts of our diet. Limits on additives, sugars, and caffeine would obviously benefit everyone. But I don’t know what sort of laws could be passed to stop people from becoming obese. Laws could curb the epidemic, but I don’t know what those laws would be. Would you set limits on serving sizes at restaurants? Use a tracker to monitor daily physical activity? Limit what could be sold? Perhaps candy, soda, chips, and other junk food could be taxed in the same way that luxury items and cigar

Profile Essay Rough Draft

This is the rough draft of my profile essay for College Writing. We had to interview someone and then write an essay incorporating that interview. My brother volunteered and we had a half-hour interview about his childhood and early memories. Which I promptly realized was not going to help me at all. It seems that my brother remembers almost nothing prior to high school. So I was forced to go in a different direction with it at the last minute. This is what I've come up with so far. Any suggestions would be welcome, as I do not think this is ready to be turned in and I have until next Thursday to get it tightened up. Mister Mom Jack Douglas McCarrick is both amiable and likable. At 46 years old, Doug’s dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, his hair and goatee are frosted with grey, and he’s a bit rounder all over than he’d like to be. Some of that being what he calls “the McCarrick genes,” the rest is age, fast food, and laziness. He has the build of the former high school athlete he wa

What are the affects on the body in regards to not getting enough sleep? What happens if you are driving with not enough sleep? Should drowsy drivers be criminally liable for crashes that they cause on the road? I hear far too many people say that they are fine with four or five hours of sleep. Sure, you might be able to get up and go to work all week doing that and expect that you’ll get caught up on your sleep on the weekend. But sleep doesn’t work like that. Study after study has shown that 8-hours is the magic number (7-9 hours, which varies by age and some other factors). Without enough sleep the body is lethargic, exhaustion will set in quickly, you’ll be subject to mood swings, and you are just simply not as resistant to health related matters such as sickness and weight gain. I’m not saying you won’t be able to function, but you are absolutely functioning at some degree of deficiency. I have been on a strict regimen of 8-hours sleep a night for the last four years and I certain

Personal Essay Final

First essay is done, submitted, turned in. You've seen the sketch and the rough, this is the final draft for my first college paper. It'll be interesting to see if the plagiarism algorithm finds this or the other two posts when it searches the web. I can't imagine it would, but who knows. I guess it's a chance I'm willing to take. Have a read if you are so inclined. Connections My tie was too tight and my suitcoat too loose. I had nicked my chin while shaving, which was something that hadn’t happened in recent memory prior to this morning. Fortunately, I had left early because finding this place had been trickier than I had expected. I had made it here with precious little time to spare. “Gentlemen,” I said, shaking hands and introducing myself, “I’m Ronn McCarrick. It is a pleasure to meet you both.” I found myself in a room with two men. The first was a man who went to church with a man I hadn’t talked to in eight years. He was mid-fifties, tall, and fit with a ru

What health benefits are associated with spirituality? Do you agree that spirituality improves your health and your daily out look on life? How does spirituality affect our community? Do you believe in spirituality and if so why or why not? Do you have any examples to share with class on how your health has improved with this connection? Spirituality provides the health benefits of connection, of belonging, and provides a sense of purpose that is good for mental wellbeing. Some studies have shown that it is also has physical health benefits, but I do not believe that there has been sufficient evidence to link it too spirituality itself and I am inclined to think this is tied to the benefits of increased mental health and the wellbeing that brings with it. Not being involved in any organized religion, I can only say that in moving to the Grand Rapids area I was surprised by the amount of religion I encountered on a daily basis. This area is far more religious than anything in my previou

Personal Essay Rough Draft

This is the rough draft for my first college paper. I already showed you the sketch. This is a bit more polished that that was, but it is still not the final essay. Again, I thought I'd put it here so that you can see that I am doing something in school. I've got to polish this into a final draft for next Thursdays class. Have a read if you are so inclined. Connections I was in a room with two men. A man who went to church with a man I hadn’t talked to in eight years. The other man was from one of the Carolina’s. I had talked to both of them on the phone. Once each, and only briefly prior to this meeting. I didn’t know them. They didn’t know me. But we were, each of us, looking for something from the other. They wanted someone to fill an open position in their company and I wanted a new job. This meeting was years in the making. Once I had settled into my life. To what extent are individuals responsible for their choices, given the powerful influence of our environment and world? Example:  Does someone who drinks excessively to suppress emotions and trauma that has happened in their life have the same right to a liver transplant? Each of us is ultimately responsible for the choices we make. But choices are often like wishes, if wishes and genies were real, and for the sake of this argument they are. Your choices are not always well informed and often don’t result in the way you expected. You rub the lamp and the genie pops out. You want to be rich. You ask for all the money in the world. The genie gives you all the money in the world. Wish granted. Financial ruin and chaos descends upon the word. Or maybe you only ask for a million dollars, the genie takes the money from a bank, and the police show up to take you to jail. Not what you wanted? Of course not. That’s what genies do with your wishes. Genies are pricks. Choices are full of just as

Personal Essay Sketch

This is the sketch for my first college paper. I thought I'd put it here so that you can see that I am doing something in school. I don't think I'll put everything up; because lots of it is not terribly entertaining. But in this case, probably in the case of most of my writing assignments, I'm going to put the assignments up in each of their stages. This is the roughest of those stages, the sketch. I would probably call it the rough draft, but that's just semantics. I've got to polish this into a rough draft for next Thursdays class and then into a complete final draft the week after. Have a read if you are so inclined. Just realize that it is basically free writing with the spell check turned on. Connections I was in a room with two men. A man who went to church with a man I hadn’t talked to in eight years. The other man was from out of state, one of the Carolina’s. I don’t remember which one. I’d talked to both of them on the phone, once each. I didn’t know th
