Healthy Living WK09

Week nine in healthy living is all about alcohol and tobacco and this weeks discussion board question was, What do you think the "legal" drinking age should be? Why? What community problems would arise by lowering drinking age? What is one health problem associated with alcohol or tobacco....Explain! I think the “legal” drinking age should be the age of majority, which in most states is 18. My reasoning is simple, if you are an adult in the eyes of the state you should have full and free access to all the benefits of being an adult. If as a society we agree on the age at which an individual is considered an adult, then we need to respect that adult’s decision to decide if they will drink. This might result in some bad decision making, by 18-20-year old’s (but these are the same problems we have with 21-25-year old’s already) and these young people are already drinking. But as we already punish them as adults, we should allow them to make decisions as adults. This comes back t

Snoopy

I picked up this small writing Snoopy as another motivator for my writing and because everybody loves Snoopy. Mostly, it's a reminder that I need to be writing. But still, Snoopy is cool. However, he doesn't sit up very well on his own and so ends up resting with his nose to the page. That could be because he's working hard, but I think it's just bad design. Besides, I thought to myself, he needs a doghouse to sit on. So I set about building him a dog house out of craft wood. I based it on the picture you see there. And yes, I know that Snoopy's doghouse has a peaked roof, but I needed it to be flat so that he could sit on it and the typewriter wouldn't slide off the side. I like it and I'm very happy with how it turned out. I'm debating about putting it on a base with the words "It was a dark and stormy night." printed above him. I'm still undecided on that. It's done for now.

Healthy Living WK08

I've put on a lot of weight as I've gotten older and it's mostly a problem of diet. Too much soda. Too much fast food. I had horrible teeth as a child. I wore braces for four years. So I've had my share of body image issues. I still have them, only I'm older now and I mostly don't care. So anyway, body image, that's this weeks subject in Healthy Living. Here's the question for the weekly discussion board and my post in response. Discuss how our culture, family and friends can have a negative impact on our body image? We have all probably seen or heard someone being judged or talked about in regards to a persons appearance. How did this make you feel? Body Image Culture determines what is normal, usually through some sort of ideal. If we fall to far outside our cultural norm we are judged unfit or undesirable. Family is often times our harshest critics, in their efforts to make us fit the cultural norm they often cause emotional harm by making us self-con

A Thing I Made

I have a small collection of 1:18 scale die-cast cars and there are a couple more that I want to pick up. Most notably, I want a 1977 Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am. But they look diminutive on my 11-inch high shelves, so I decided to build a display stand to put them on. It's not great, not my best work, but it does what I want it to do and looks pretty good doing it. I rounded the front corners to match the dowels and then after sanding the whole thing, I put on about three coats of dark stain with built in satin poly. For some reason it didn't darken the edge boards nearly as much as the top and bottom. That red corvette needs to be painted blue and the yellow corvette needs to be painted white, in order to fit my vision and to accurately represent my dad's cars. But I bought them both on eBay years ago and I still haven't gotten around to doing that. Probably, when I get my air brush those will be projects number one and number two. But who knows when I'll actua

How would you react if you found out your grade in a health and fitness class was going to be affected by your body composition as measured by your BMI? Are parents to blame when children are overweight? Should parents be charged with negligence in caring for their children (if a child is over weight or obese)? If I found out during the class that my grade was going to be affected by my BMI I would be quite upset. If I learned this information going into the class, I would be less upset. There is a lot of unknown qualifiers in that first sentence. Is my grade going to be based on a comparison to my beginning vs end BMI for the class? Will the grade be based on my results or some other criteria for healthy BMI. These are things I would need to know in order to gauge my reaction to such an announcement. Parents are most definitely responsible for their children’s health. And as such, an overweight child is the result of the parenting that child receives. Parents buy, make, and serve the

GRCC and Winter 2017

Today was the first day I was able to register for classes during the Winter semester. I wanted to make sure I had the widest range of available classes, so I did my registering this morning. Also, class registration is an assignment in my Intro to College class. Earlier in that class I used the My Degree Path tool to plan out the rest of this year, so I knew what I was looking to put in my cart. My student loan stuff is all in place, so it was easy peasy. So, my schedule for the Winter 2017 schedule will again be full, three classes to meet my credit requirement for my student loan. I know, I said three was one too many. But I need six credits and two of my classes are only 2 credits each. That leaves me taking three classes again. EN 102 - English Composition 2 HVA 110 - Basic Refrigeration MN 116 - Basic Welding Monday nights at the GR M-TEC center learning to weld, Wednesday nights at the Grandville High School taking english, and Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Applied Techno

The Problem at Piper

Here is another little bit of the college experience for those of you who like this sort of thing. For those of you who don't, just skip it and move on to something else. This week in my college writing class we were asked to read this article, " School Cheating Scandal Tests a Town's Values ." Once we had done that were were to go onto the discussion boards and answer three questions about plagiarism and its consequences within the context of the article. I don't think you're missing anything if I don't include the questions. I think you can extrapolate the questions from my answers. Straight out of the gate this article stamps its definition of plagiarism on this piece. “School Cheating Scandal Tests a Town’s Values,” immediately characterizes plagiarism as cheating and as something that reflects a lack of ethics. It continues by referring to students who have “stolen sections of their botany projects off the internet” and refers to papers which are “lac

What is the Deal with This Thing?

Well, the 2-week supply of antibiotics for my leg has run out and things seem better, but still not quite right. I sent this picture to my doctor with the question, "Should I make another appointment?" after a 2-week run of antibiotics Apparently, not quite yet. The next step is going to be a prescription steroid cream to try for a week. We'll see how that works. At this point, that whole area is still 'dented' and intermittently the whole calf flushes red. The cat bit me in April. I just want it to heal up and go away.

Profile Essay Final

I didn't put near enough time on this one. This was a crazy week for me. I worked 14.5 hours on Monday, the wife had surgery on Tuesday, and another long day on Wednesday combined with an unproductive weekend results in a paper that I'm not quite satisfied with. But I had to turn it in, and this is what I came up with. I present you with my second essay for EN 100 - College Writing, a profile essay on my brother. Mister Mom Jack Douglas McCarrick is both amiable and likable. At 46 years old, Doug is dressed in a sleeveless t-shirt and shorts. His dark hair and goatee are frosted with grey, and he’s a bit rounder all over than he’d like to be. Some of that roundness being what he calls “the McCarrick genes.” The rest is age, fast food, and laziness. He has the build of the former high school athlete he was and the softball player he has become. He has rosy, dimpled cheeks that only serve to make his smile more open and inviting. Friendly and outgoing, he is an incorrigible flirt

Sequel to the Jungle Book?

Just trying to be funny there folks. I know it's not a sequel to Jungle Book. That kid was raised by wolves. This kid was raised by apes. I don't think they were even in the same jungle. Though both were enjoyable movies in their own rights. Let's talk about The Legend of Tarzan I only recently listened to the audiobooks for Edgar Rice Burrough’s first two Tarzan books; Tarzan of the Apes (1912) and The Return of Tarzan (1913). I was both surprised by them and enjoyed them immensely. The Tarzan of those two books is not the Tarzan of television and movie fame in many ways. Hollywood always makes changes, some aesthetic, some practical, and some just for the sake of making changes. That’s just the way Hollywood does things. But the gist of things is that Tarzan is a man raised by apes. I was excited when I saw the preview for this movie. It looked promising. Good CGI. Good actors. Seems pretty accurate to the source material. Last night I watched this movie and I’d like to s
