Apologies and Explanations

I have been absolutely swamped by the sheer amount of information that has come to me, from other researchers around the world, regarding Kirrac, Jovan Dorr, and a number of other individuals either lucky enough or unfortunate enough to have experienced that world. It seems that the experiences of Jovan Dorr are not entirely unique, but I am doing my due diligence and parsing through the information to weed out the less-reliable accounts. Seeing the interest in this subject and the success of our little experiment, I have extended my contract for this website for an additional two years. I hope to have new and revelatory content for you soon. --R. McCarrick

Less of a Last Minute Scramble

When was the last time Christmas Eve was on a day I didn't work? Google says, 2011 was the last Saturday Christmas Eve. Which may be true, but it feels like it never happens. Christmas Eve is usually when I make my last minute scramble to buy that last minute gift. After work. Not this year. This year I'm going to do my last minute scrabble at 10:00 am, like a reasonable human being. The tree is up and it's surrounded by presents. Some degree of food prep has been done... not my area, but it looks like something was done. Everything is ready for go time this afternoon. I've even done laundry, so I have something to wear that isn't work related, and I put up this festive blog post. I'm in pretty good shape this year. So good luck with your last minute shopping and prepping. I hope that it is a little less of a scramble for you this year. Have a safe and happy Christmas Eve and a Merry Christmas. yes, i am up at 7:30 am on a saturday

Seems Early to Me

I was at the Home Depot today and they’ve stripped all the Christmas decorations off the front wall, packed up all the stock, and moved everything to the far corner of the store by the garden center. The main aisle going to the back of the store is full of grills. Yes. Barbecue grills. This seems really early to me. They’ve got two rows of snow blowers sitting across from a line of new grills. In December. I expect the lawn tractors to come out next week. Get a New Year deal on a new Lawn-boy. Meh. I mean I get that there are trends in marketing and in sales, but I’m pretty sure that here in West Michigan we’ll still be needing snow shovels and ice melt up through March and into April. Just seems silly to me; getting all this stuff out already.

What to Do

It’s decision time again. Last year, Christmas Day I picked up the domain name baenrahl.com from Google Domains. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it at the time, but I wanted to check out that particular Google service. It’s been a year now, and it’s time to renew it or let it go. As far as Google Domains goes I really have no opinion one way or another. It’s a service. They sell a product. That’s about the extent of my feelings on the subject. baenrahl.com , on the other hand, is something I’d like to keep. Initially, I had no idea what to do with it, or at least just vague ideas of what to do with it. But I like the idea I ended up going with, that I was chronicling the adventures of a “sword & planet” genre hero, someone in the vein of Dray Prescot or John Carpenter. But with school and life and whatnot, there hasn’t been much work done on that idea.   Baenrahl isn’t the kind of name that I’m worried about losing. I don’t think someone else is going to come along and g

Report Card Time

My grades have been finalized and my "report card" is in hand. Not too shabby for an old guy. I'd say I did pretty well. CLS 100  Intro to Col: New Student Exp,   A EN 100  College Writing, A- WE 189  Healthy Living,   A Grade Point: 3.859 The four week break has begun and maybe, just maybe, I can get some posts up on the webpage and get some things done around the house. Both of which would be far easier without that pesky Christmas holiday taking up everybody's time. We'll just have to see how this all plays out. Intro to College - Done

Last night was the last meeting for my Introduction to College class. I scored 29 out of 25 on the final test (there were 4 extra credit questions). I don't know my final grade yet, but I'm confident that it will be an A. This was a pretty simple class and everyone should have gotten an A, but probably they didn't. And while it was an easy class, it was full of good information pertaining to success at GRCC, and college in general. It was definitely worth taking, and as an added bonus, having completed it I can now choose classes without needing to get them signed off by the counseling department. My final point total has been posted for College Writing, 661 out of a possible 731. That's 90.4%. Based on my understanding of grades, that should be an A, assuming my math is right. So yay me.

Witcher 3: Jackass

I have been out of the gaming thing for a while now. It's not that I don't have the time, but more that I just don't want to use the time I have to play games. But, there are times when I just want to mindlessly waste an hour. With that in mind, I picked up the latest Witcher game and all it's expansions as some sort of super-pack via amazon downloads. The game itself seems good. Nice graphics. Lot's of stuff to do. Detailed world. Yadda, yadda, yadda. I'm very bad at it, but that's not the games fault. I'm not really immersed in the game and I am not playing through it particularly fast. I don't have that kind of time and so I'm very early into the story of the thing. I think I'm looking for a griffon or some shit. Whatever it is I'm doing, or supposed to be doing, is always superseded by the fact that I do not like the main character. He's a jackass. Doesn't matter what choice you make in the dialog box, he is always a jackass.

New Van

September 6, 2016, that is the date I was told that I would be getting a new van for work. Over the last three months I have responded negatively to the half-dozen emails, from various folks in the company, asking if I had taken delivery of my new van. Today, look what I found sitting in my driveway when I came home. A new van. Sweet. Sure, they're predicting lots of snow this weekend, and next week the temperature is supposed to drop because of some cold front or whatever. So possibly the worst weekend so far to get a new truck put together, but look at this. The ladder rack is on it, new puck locks are ready, and the lettering has been done. Christmas has come early. So many empty shelves just waiting to have stuff put on them. Of course, tonight I take the boy to his fathers, tomorrow I have to study for finals, and Sunday it's pick the boy up and go to his orchestra concert... I may not get started on this right away. So there it is, my new ride. The new Truckcast studio. M

College Writing - Done

Here it is, the last essay for my EN 100 - College Writing class. I went in tonight, turned this in with my portfolio, and busted through the final exam in 20-minutes. I feel pretty good about the exam, but I'm not sure if this will be an A or B grade for the class. Neither my research essay or my interview essay were as strong as I would have liked and my quiz grades were a bit lame. Ah well, second class is done and I think I did alright for not having been in an English class in 30-years. Side note: The paragraphs in this are very long and not the way I would have typically written them, but this is how she wanted it so this is how she gets it. Final Portfolio Communication through writing is as important as, and possibly more important than, that of communication through speech. In order to be able to communicate through the written word you must be able to communicate meaning, inference, and opinion without the physical cues of speech or body language. What to Be When You Grow Up

Tonight was career day in my Intro to College class. We had to write a paper and create a presentation on our career of choice. Somehow, I missed the whole presentation bit, so rather than showing a PowerPoint presentation, I got up and did my whole dog and pony show. It was like story time with Ronn, if story time was only 3-5 minutes long and the stories were about working in HVAC. It went better than you might have expected. I answered about half-a-dozen questions and racked up 48 out of 50 points. And that's with no slides. BooYah! Here's what I wrote for my career research paper. A Career in HVAC I have made the decision to continue my pursuits in the field of heating, venting, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) and as such I will be pursuing a career as a mechanical engineer. I have chosen this career based on my current career path and my existing experience in the HVACR and building maintenance fields. I already have over 15-years of experience in the heating a

Healthy Living - Done

I just submitted my last assignment, took the test, and filled out the class survey for my Healthy Living Class. And with that, I have officially completed my first college class at GRCC. No grade yet, but I'm pretty confident that my final grade will be an A. I'm also not really sure how I feel about taking classes online. It was a good class, but I'm not sure that I really learned anything. Everything was open book and nothing was timed, so there wasn't really any motivation to know the material. It made for an easy grade, but that's not really what I'm looking for. All of my classes next semester are in a class room, so I'll have to evaluate this whole online learning thing when next I have an online class. For now, one down and two to go.
