Do I Even Know What I'm Doing?

unacceptable. every single one, unacceptable Last night was an exercise in frustration. I am simply not getting this oxyacetylene welding. The instructor says it's my angle, but I've changed that and I still cannot keep my flame from eating the metal. Even when I get my puddle to flow with the torch, I still end up with a ledge in my piece that shouldn't be there. I can't get my welds to be consistent and what I am doing is just plain ugly. I made 10 welds, then the instructor demonstrated one for me, and then I made three more that were only marginally better than the first ten. To make matters worse, last week I felt tired and off my game. This week I felt sharp and ready... my welds were worse this week, though I did get more of them done. I could be fine with all of that. I have no intention of becoming a welder. I just thought welding might be a good skill to have. It could be useful and open up some new DIY projects. But the instructor said we need to get 2-3 weld

Two Days

The wife is going to the dentist for some work. I've got an essay to revise for EN 102. Somebody needs to install the new faucet in the kitchen. Studying needs to occur for my Refrigeration quiz. Taxes need to be done. I've emptied my bucket of work orders for the month. These are all the reasons I'm going to take a couple days of PTO. If you need to reach me today or tomorrow, I'll be at home. coffee helps I'll put up my latest essay once I get it finished. It's currently titled The Secret Life of Work and deals with the perceptions I had of work as a child compared to the reality of work as I have experienced it as an adult. I don't know how good it is, but I enjoyed writing it. The genesis of the idea comes from several conversations I've had with friends and coworkers over the years. Tonight, I'll be in my welding class trying to get two welds done. It's harder than it looks.

Welcome

Just a note here to let you know that I've redirected both arohen.com and ronnmccarrick.com to this page until such time as I decide what to do with those domains/sites. So I welcome you to my new Blogger site, Creative Investigator. At this point, Blogger seems to do most of what I want, only with a few more limitations on the customization of things. The only thing I haven't figured out a real solution for is the podcast. I can host it on my Google Drive, but I can't stream it from there, so to listen you have to download it and then listen via another method. It has been suggested that I should simply move from podcasting to vlogging, and that is a possibility, but I would prefer to have the option to do both. I'm still investigating my options. Stay tuned.

Decision Time

Lunarpages has deleted my account from their servers. Which means that the websites for both ronnmccarrick.com and arohen.com have disappeared from the internet. So if you go to those places, they will not be there. You've been warned. Now the decision becomes whether to reopen shop with a new host, leave well enough alone, or to simply report those domains to this blogger site. I'm still paying off Christmas, so I've got some time to think about it. For now, I'm going to keep posting here on blogger and using IFTTT to share to my social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Google+)

Half A Draft

Came home from school tonight a bit frustrated.  After spending 3 hours welding unacceptable pieces, I was told to try again next week. This is the second week in a row where I was unable to get two projects done in a lab. I'm going to put myself in a tight spot if I'm not careful. We're supposed to get two a week done. Once home, I got to work on my first essay for English 102. I managed to get about half of a draft written, 715 words. I'll do the same after my refrigeration class tomorrow night and I should have something to turn in on Wednesday. I think it's doable. *fixed a spelling error. Thanks Denis.

Ye Olde College Spirit

I know you've already seen it, but I would like to formally introduce you to my new ride. I'm calling it the bookmobile. It's kinda like the batmobile, only without the rockets, machine guns, and that whole bat motif. So, not at all like the batmobile. The wife and I share the malibu; we're a one car family and usually that's more than enough. But our schedules don't match up quite as well this semester as they did last, and as such, I needed a car to get back and forth to college. Which means I need a car maybe 3 times a week. I am not going to buy another new car for that. Heck, I can't justify anything with payments for that amount of usage. But an $800, 1991 Dodge Spirit with less than 70k miles on it; that I can do. I bought it from my friend/neighbor/coworker across the street. It was his mother's car, she was elderly and rarely drove it, and she passed last year and it was just sitting in the garage. It runs and drives very nicely for a car that i

Two posts in one day, oh joy! I wanted to try out this new website/tool that is supposed to post to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and a bunch of other sites when I put up a blog post. It's an applet over at IFTTT.com (or, in other words, If This, Then That). So you're getting a second post so that I can see if it works. And as an added bonus, I'm giving you some stars. I made these star bars for my latest movie review post, but they could be used to review anything. I'm putting them out there for the world to have and use, because, I was looking for some and couldn't find any. Feel free to  grab them and use them for whatever it is you'd like to review. They are white/gold stars on a transparent background. Download, modify, or whatever, I release my claim to them. They belong to the world now. 0-Stars (Haven't Seen/Heard/Tasted/Whatever It) 1-star (Hated It) 2-stars (Didn't Like It) 3-stars (Liked It) 4-stars (Really Liked It) 5-stars (Loved It)

Tyrant Lizard

Peanut butter and chocolate. Eggs and toast. Boys and girls. Somethings are just better as a pair. Such is the case with dinosaurs. If you have a triceratops you have to have a tyrannosaurus to make a complimentary pair. Am I right? Of course I am. So I complimented my Sideshow Dinosauria Triceratops with their T-rex: The Tyrant King statue. Which is the same 1/15th scale and on a similar base. I don't have anyplace where I can display them together, they're too big. But here it is in all it's coolness. such tiny arms Everything I said about the triceratops statue applies here. It's big. It's very detailed. It's accurate. I like it very much. It's a bit over 13-inches high and a whopping 30-inches long. At this size, I would be afraid if it were alive, full size and big as life I think shitting yourself would be the most likely scenario. the tyrant king Tyrannosaurus facts might look something like these; 40-feet long, 12-feet high at the hips, 10-12 tons.

Three-Horned Face

Before Star Wars. Before Dungeons & Dragons. Before all the things that pop culture taught me to enjoy, there were dinosaurs. And just like a countless number of children before and after me, I loved dinosaurs. I still love dinosaurs. But it is an allusive love that comes and goes from my mind, like that one song by that artist that you love but forget about completely until you hear it again. Jurassic Park movies, anyone. This Christmas I received a reminder of that love. A little something to take me back to those simpler times when we still stood up to change the channel and went outside to play with our friends. My Christmas came in the form of a 66 million year old dinosaur, as replicated by Sideshow Collectibles. This is from their Dinosauria collection, the Triceratops Statue. triceratops This guy clocks in at about 1/15th scale and I always forget how big these things were, but a Triceratops was huge. Were talking somewhere in the range of 26-30 feet in length, 9.5-10 feet

Truckcast #114: A Thing I Do

I'm cruising into 2017 in the front seat of the brand new Truckcast studio. What better way to test everything out than to do a Truckcast. So here you go, a little something to tickle your eardrums and tantalize your ol' thought box. So without any further ado, let's get to the good stuff. Testing. Testing. Is this thing on? This is a thing I do... Truckcast #14: A Thing I Do click the link to download. I haven't quite worked this out yet.

The Ranger

Suddenly Frodo noticed that a strange-looking weather-beaten man, sitting in the shadows near the wall, was also listening intently to the hobbit-talk. He had a tall tankard in front of him, and was smoking a long-stemmed pipe curiously carved. His legs were stretched out before him, showing high boots of supple leather that fitted him well, but had seen much wear and were now caked with mud. A travel-stained cloak of heavy dark-green cloth was drawn close about him, and in spite of the heat of the room he wore a hood that overshadowed his face; but the gleam of his eyes could be seen as he watched the hobbits. 'Who is that?' Frodo asked, when he got a chance to whisper to Mr. Butterbur. 'I don't think you introduced him?' 'Him?' said the landlord in an answering whisper, cocking an eye without turning his head. 'I don't rightly know. He is one of the wandering folk—Rangers we call them. He seldom talks: not but what he can tell a rare tale when he h
